henry + marie’s “woodland” room

I hadn’t planned to photograph their room here in the Poconos, but when we started to pack it hit me that this would be their last shared room (cue the ugly mama waterworks). Of course this room is just borrowed – all I did was add our accessories – most of the credit goes to my good friend Chanee Vijay. They’ve been sharing this room for many years whenever we stay here, but since we moved in for a year we were able to personalize it a bit more. Our new house finally affords them their own rooms, which is a luxury that they haven’t yet known. While I’m excited for them and know it’s time (they’ll be nine this summer), it’s the end of an era for them (and us) and I’m feeling emotional about it. I can’t help but reminisce about their nursery in our first house, their toddler room transformation (oops never shared that), and their “wild” room in our loft. They’ve been the best roommates a parent could hope for, and it’s helped to bond them forever.

It makes me happy to see so many of their treasures here with them. Of course, we’ve added a few along the way, to include the dolls they both received for their “woodland birthday” last year. A few of the stuffed animals and the custom pennant are from a favorite artist, Roxy Marj. The bedding is all from this collection which I bought a few years ago. I think they have the perfect vibe for this high contrast, cozy mountain home setting! The wooden LEGO figure is actually mine – it was a gift from the kids to me and while I can’t wait to display it on my desk, it looks at home with their collection of Little People Big Dreams books (we are slowly but surely collecting them all). I spy a peekaboo teddy!

I don’t have a wide-angle lens (I’ve rented one in the past for other shoots) so unfortunately I couldn’t really get a great shot with both beds fully, but honestly…you get the idea. The wall facing the beds is just closets and nothing exciting (although they provide amazing storage for all of their other toys, books, you name it). While you can’t see it, the windows frame a beautiful landscape of trees, trees, and you guessed it…more trees. They were outside enjoying those very trees while I photographed their room! It makes me happy to capture and memorialize their current interests…Marie is very proud of her pin collection (I have one too…like mother like daughter), and Henry is obsessed with all things Basquiat. This is still home for a little bit longer, and we’re savoring every moment. We are so thankful that we don’t have to say goodbye forever to this sanctuary, and it gives me comfort to know that they will still share this room whenever we visit.
