in the wake

newtownshootingvictims

In the wake of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, I feel compelled to share my thoughts and feelings. My heart is broken for the families that lost a loved one, and as a parent, I feel sick to my stomach. Like so many, I feel that now is the time to begin a broader dialogue about mental illness and gun control. I want to embrace the anger and sadness I feel and channel it into action. I have been inspired by the words of my friend Kayla, and Liza Long, to name a few, and feel that speaking out in this public forum is a start. In my opinion, even with gun control reform, there will always be ways to obtain a weapon. I feel we need to address the root cause first and foremost, and provide more comprehensive care for those in need of psychological help. Prevention, in many cases (not all), is possible.

Mental illness is a disease, and like any other, needs treatment. I speak from personal experience-anxiety, depression and bi-polar disorder run in my family. We’re lucky-we can afford therapy and medication, and have great health benefits. There are so many who suffer from much more serious, debilitating conditions that either don’t have access to help or somehow get overlooked by society. All too often, without proper treatment, people fall victim to their own minds. By no means am I insinuating that anyone suffering from a mental illness or disorder would commit such a heinous crime-obviously there are almost always other factors. This is an extremely complex conversation…my goal is to simply add my voice. If there ever was a time to delve deeper into this issue, it is now.

Will you join me and share your thoughts?

proust q & a…paris in four months

carin-olsson

Discovering Carin Olsson’s blog recently was a happy day for me. Paris in Four Months is filled with francophile delights, from the mundane to the magnificent. Her gorgeous photography first caught my eye…the “lèche vitrine” (window shopping) alone is such a treat. A Stockholm native, Carin will soon to be calling Paris home once again, and I’m excited to experience more through her lens. Be sure to follow her on Instagram for a daily dose of eye candy!

If not yourself, who would you be?

I would love to be Garance Doré or Jamie Beck for a couple of days, simply because I would love to learn so much more about what I love to do; photography (with a little bit of fashion).

What is your present state of mind?

A little bit low…the snow and the extreme cold have just arrived in Stockholm (where I’m currently located) and I’m just counting down the days until I can board the plane back to Paris.

Your favourite colour and flower.

I’m a sucker for anything in the tones of light powdery pink or beige but I also love to have bright orange, yellow and pink colours around me – those shades really make me happy. My favourite flowers are peonies. And hydrangeas.

Your idea of happiness.

Being around the people that I love (including our family pug Nixon) in a place where I feel stimulated, doing what I love to do. I would also prefer if the sun would shine as much as possible.

Your idea of misery.

Being without the people that I love, horrible diseases, cold weather and darkness.

Your favourite occupation.

Strolling around the streets of Paris, with the camera in my hand.

Where would you like to live?

Some place where I wouldn’t get bored… so preferably in a bigger city. I also think I could see myself living in different places during different times of the year. I can’t stand the winter and the cold and would love to be able to escape it.

Your favourite hero (or heroine) in fiction.

Indiana Jones, if he could be called a “hero”. I would love to go on all those adventures around the world, swing through the jungle, looking for treasures and historical items. Otherwise I’ll pick Batman.

Your favourite hero (or heroine) in real-life.

My mom. Just because she’s amazing in every possible way. She’s my role model and the person that I look up to. In my eyes she can do anything.

Your favourite motto.

Do what you love.

remembering brubeck

brubeck

I must take five a moment to recognize a legend. My enthusiasm for jazz began at a young age, thanks to my Dad. He introduced me to so many greats-Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman…he was even lucky enough to meet a few of them. It wasn’t until highschool that I fell deeper in love with the genre, thanks to Miles Davis, and the now late, Dave Brubeck. The jazz icon passed away last week, and I will always regret not seeing him in concert (had tickets to a cancelled show). Despite his mainstream success, he was an innovator, and his music will forever be part of my life’s playlist.

one year ago today…

oneyearago

One year ago today…our wishes came true when we discovered we were expecting! I remember the day very vividly-I just had a feeling, and so I bought a test (ok a few tests) and waited until mr. fleurishing came home from work, which was almost impossible for my impatient self. Together we waited, the minutes seemed infinite…and then we looked together. We gasped, cried happy tears, and hugged. A long, loving, beautiful embrace that I will never forget. In that moment, our lives were forever changed…our love had created life. We placed the two tests that we later gave to my parents in my stocking and took this shot. A bit freaky in my opinion, considering we learned after Christmas that we were having twins!! Needless to say, it was a very special holiday…but this one is even more so.
