living in limbo

moioncarousel

Living in limbo feels a bit like a carousel ride…going in circles while also navigating ups and downs. Like most people, I enjoy carousels, but let’s face it – it’s mostly about going around and round until the music stops and the lights dim. It’s been quite the ride since we chose to sell our house and set out on a new adventure. While we made the decision to forge a new path, that path has yet to present itself, and I’m growing increasingly impatient and frustrated.  It’s been a year or more now that we, as a family, have found ourselves unsure of our direction. As someone that yearns for control over much in life (as ridiculous as that can be), I’ve had the hardest time with all of it. Limbo has become a place of unfulfillment, sadness, frustration, isolation and general “meh”-ness for me. It’s been a struggle to live with this mentality – it’s not healthy. While I’m not fully sure of how to overcome this mental state, I’m determined to do so.

I know that by trying so hard to maintain “control” of our lives, we can miss out on amazing things. Just because we hope for certain things to happen, doesn’t mean they’re meant to be. I’ve been looking to my children a lot, acknowledging and appreciating all that they can teach me. They begin each day with such an innocence and excitement, not tainted by what lies behind or ahead of them, and blissfully unaware of any situation or stress. They are engaged, focused, and deliriously happy. They’re enjoying the ride, because we’re on it together–when or where it stops is irrelevant. So for now, I’m going to do my best to embrace this time in our lives. I’ve gotten off the horse and am going to try the swan seat for a while. After all, I’m sharing the ride with the people I love the most in this world, and they’re keeping me from jumping off.

bon weekend

parisplayforblog

I’m not sure I’ve ever been so thankful for a weekend..this week has been a doozy, with both me and the kids being sick (hence the lack of posts). We are finally feeling better, and I have my voice back, even if I sound like a lifelong smoker. I’ve been missing Paris fiercely lately (more than the usual), probably because I’m reaching the end of my content from last year (still streeetching that out). The kids haven’t stopped talking about our trip since the day we returned, and we’ve been keeping the memories fresh in a number of ways. I’m so thankful they loved it so much, and look forward to the day we can go back with them. Since I’m always planning for Paris, here are a few links to inspire some serious wanderlust.

BON WEEKEND!

la droguerie du marais

rue-des-rosiers

The most amazing crêpes (and falafels) I’ve ever had in Paris (or anywhere) can be found on the lovely Rue des Rosiers. Situated in the 4th arrondissement, La Droguerie du Marais is a gem, with delicious sweet + savory options and service with a smile. There are a few stools inside should you wish to rest your weary feet, although you could always run to the nearby Place des Vosges to enjoy it with a view, or do what we did and not waste any precious time to dig in. Marie knows what’s up – she emerged from her cozy canopy to take a peek (she’s looking right at the facade). Clever + curious, that girl. A little sidenote: be sure not to confuse this with La Droguerie in the 1st, which is completely different but also amazing.

That man is the nicest crêpe-maker in Paris, I’m sure of it. I neglected to get his name, but I believe he is one of only two men you will find there, both being très gentille. I’ve always said I could survive solely on crêpes if necessary, and this place would make that a dream. After first making a meal of their amazing savory crepes, we ordered a few sweet ones. The kids really loved them, and we ended up with another round before leaving with big sugar and nutella-smudged smiles. Whether you’re just strolling by (pun intended) or intend to sit +  savor, this one is worth stopping for.

Well hello March! I can’t help but think of luck and chance with the upcoming holiday this month…blame it on my Irish heritage. This new series, a collaboration with Lindsey Buck of The Hive Studio, has been popular – thank you for your support! Each month we’re highlighting a French word or phrase, and for March we chose bonne chance. Interestingly enough, the French also consider it bad luck to say this in certain situations, such as before a performance. In that instance, many simply say merde or je te dis merde which is more like “break a leg”. While having the word merde on your desktop would certainly be interesting and a possible conversation starter with your office mates, I figured you might appreciate this one a bit more. Isn’t Lindsey’s work beautiful?! Download both versions below, if you’re feeling lucky!
